waking up hungry

What is it that want? This is the question I struggle with every single day. What do I want? What do I want to accomplish? How am I going to do it? I am obsessed with questions. And I think every single person who has ever set and accomplished goals is plagued by the same questions. This is what it means to "wake up hungry". Having those questions and always seeking those answers. Always. every single day. with out pause or exception. We must wake up hungry!

I have a lot goals this year around self improvement. Things like being more kind, being more present with my wife and family, and trying to listen more. And then there are my competitive goals. These are the goals that I need to stay hungry. They demand, doing the work, sacrifice, focus, and will. These are the goals that need me to wake up hungry. I ne to persue these challenges like a starving mountain lion. They demand nothing less than that sort of obsession. You know the quote "the miricale is in the work you are not doing"? That is the mind set you need when waking up hungry.

When I was a young man competing in tournaments and training for blackbelt exams it was easy. Waking up hungry was just the natural state of being for me. I was hungry all the time. I wanted to win, I wanted to graduate from school, I wanted to shake off the image that I was just another poor kid. I had a lot of chips on my shoulder then, that kept me focused. As an adult I have lost those chips. And it has been harder for me to focus on the why of things. I am comfortable as an adult. I havent been hungry in a really long time. And for some of us that is ok too. Complacancy is earned through success. If you've accomplished your goals it is ok to relax and enjoy your success. And I mean that. But when you decide you want more again, and I mean there comes a time when we all want more. You have to starve that beast inside you, so that it wakes up hungry. Wake up ready to accomplish. Wake up ready to do what is needed to complete the task! And then go get it done!
