So I like to run. Like I really really really like to run. Not just for the runners high but for how simple it is as a workout routine. You usually just need a good pair of shoes and some time. But the work out itself is very meditative. You just put one foot infant of the other and propel yourself forward.
I love my time spent running. I can organize my thoughts, I can self talk, I can plan and scheme projects for the future, but really it's just my time to be with myself and nothing else. I am also weird in the fact that I don't like to run without my head phones in. This is really my space to unplug and to be present in the moment with myself and the sensation of simple hard work. Phil Knight of Nike was famous for recuiting his first empolyees on a six mile run and would constantly go for a run if there was ever a big descion that needed to be made with a clear head.
And that's really where the joy comes from. As a parent, husband, and business owner it is really difficult to find the time to just be with myself, and organize my chaotic thoughts into tangible and achievable goals and projects. If you don't know me very well the joy of placing things into their metaphorical and literal boxes is mighty satisfying to me. It also allows me to see a path forward through the mess. And if that isnt helpful well I don't know what is.
The metaphor of running is also beautiful in its simplicity. One step at a time. You reach your destination one step at a time. sometimes its up that last hill, and other times its a marathon. But so long as you are continuing to put on foot in front of the other you're gonna reach the end. So so simple. Achieving goals is broken down the exact same way, one step at a time. Break the bigger goal into smaller more easily acheived steps.
And dont even get me started on the runners high! I have spent most of my life struggling with my relationship with alcohol. But nothing really compares to that endorphin rush you get as you run and when you're done. I find the clarity of mind that I have at the end of a good run is the best for facing the rest of what could be an otherwise distracted and unproductive day. Running really does just get my head right.
So if your considering adding running to your routine It comes highly recommended from me. Dont go all out take it slow and let the simple process of being outside and alone with yourself guide you to success! ASAI!
